Swallow's Tail Mate
A Protected Queen Checking Orthogonally Face-to-Face While Two Enemy Pieces Block Both Rear Diagonals
Also known in French chess literature as Le Mat du Guéridon (“Pedestal-Table Mate,” because the pieces trace a round tabletop resting on a tripod pedestal), Swallow’s Tail Mate is the orthogonal twin of Dovetail Mate: a PROTECTED Queen checks an uncastled/central King orthogonally face-to-face (`Qe5#` vs `Ke6`), sweeping 6 of 8 squares while two enemy pieces (`Rd7` and `Rf7`) plug both rear-diagonal shoulders!
Coach Otto: Remember Otto’s four-word key: Diagonal kiss = Dovetail; Frontal kiss = Swallow’s Tail; One-square gap = Epaulette!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Swallow's Tail Mate (Mate in 1) —
FEN: 8/3r1r1p/4k1p1/Q7/5P2/6P1/6KP/8 w - - 0 1· Qe5#1. Qe5# — Pure Swallow’s Tail (Guéridon) Mate! Protected by f4, White’s Queen checks Ke6 face-to-face—sweeping 6 of 8 neighbors—while Black’s OWN rooks on d7 and f7 plug the two diagonal rear-shoulder squares!
- [MASTERPIECE] Rook Sacrifice Pulling King into Swallow’s Tail (Mate in 2) —
FEN: 3b1b2/3rkr1p/4p1p1/Q7/5P2/6P1/6KP/4R3 w - - 0 1· Rxe6+ Kxe6 Qe5#1. Rxe6+!! — Decoy sacrifice! Rips away the e6 pawn to drag Black’s e7 King forward into the V-pocket between its own d7 and f7 rooks!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- Orthogonally Adjacent Queen Check (`Qe5#` directly in front of `Ke6`): Sweeps the King’s left, right, straight-back, and three front squares (6 of 8 total)!
- Mandatory Support: Because the Queen touches the King orthogonally, another piece or pawn (`Pf4` or `Re1`) MUST protect her!
- V-Shaped Rear Shoulders (`d7` and `f7`): Occupied by enemy Rooks/Pawns that CANNOT capture diagonally on `e5` (an enemy Pawn on `d6` or Knight on `c6` would capture `Qe5`, whereas `Rd7 + Rf7` are helpless!).
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Never step your King forward between and slightly ahead of two of your own Rooks (`Rd7 + Ke6 + Rf7`) when an enemy Queen roams free!
- Verify that neither rear-diagonal blocker (`d7` or `f7`) is an enemy Knight—since `d7/f7` to `e5` is a knight jump, ONLY a Knight on `d7` or `f7` can capture `Qe5` and refute `Qe5#`!
- Keep the square directly in front of your central King guarded against `Rxe6+` decoy sacrifices.
FAQ
Can an enemy Rook or Bishop standing on `d7` or `f7` stop `Qe5#` against `Ke6`?
Look at the coordinates (`d7` to `e5` is 1 file, 2 ranks—a KNIGHT move)! Neither a Rook NOR a Bishop on `d7/f7` attacks `e5`! ONLY an enemy Knight on `d7` or `f7` can jump to `e5` and refute a Swallow’s Tail Mate!
Why do French chess books call this “Mat du Guéridon” (Pedestal Table Mate)?
Look at `Rd7–Ke6–Rf7` above `Qe5` above `Pf4/Re1`: the wide top (`d7–f7`) narrows through `e6–e5` down to a central support stem, resembling an 18th-century French parlor pedestal table!
How can an Epaulette setup transform into a Swallow's Tail Mate in one move?
Check our Masterpiece tab! When Black stands with `Rd7–Ke7–Rf7` (shoulder-to-shoulder), sacrificing `1. Rxe6+! Kxe6` pulls the King one rank forward so those exact same two rooks become the `d7/f7` Swallow’s Tail!
