Lolli's Mate
An Advanced 6th-Rank Wedge Pawn Supporting a Point-Blank Queen Checkmate Inside the Fianchetto Hole
Published in 1763 by Modenese theorist Giambattista Lolli in Osservazioni teorico-pratiche sopra il giuoco degli scacchi, Lolli’s Mate punishes pawn weaknesses around a castled King (`...g6`). An advanced 6th-rank Pawn (`f6` or `h6`) wedges into the color holes to protect your Queen as she delivers point-blank checkmate on `g7#`—sweeping `f8`, `g8`, and `h8` all by herself!
Coach Otto: Here is Otto’s favorite Lolli secret: fleeing with `...Re8` NEVER stops `Qg7#`, because a Queen on `g7` covers `f8` too—only guarding `g7` or counter-checking works!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines

FEN: r4rk1/ppp2p1p/3p1PpQ/8/8/6P1/PPP3KP/8 w - - 0 1· Qg7#1. Qg7# — Giambattista Lolli’s 1763 signature wedge mate! White’s advanced f6 pawn drives into Black’s weakened dark squares to protect the Queen right on g7!
- [MASTERPIECE] Quiet Queen Creep into Lolli’s Mate (Mate in 2) —
FEN: r4rk1/ppp2p1p/3p1Pp1/8/7Q/6P1/PPP3KP/8 w - - 0 1· Qh6 Rfe8 Qg7#1. Qh6! — Classic dark-square infiltration! Even without check, Black is completely helpless against Qg7#.
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- Fianchetto Hole (`...g6` without `...Bg7`): Black’s `g6` pawn creates dark-square holes on `f6` and `h6` right around `g7`.
- 6th-Rank Wedge Pawn (`f6` or `h6`): One of your pawns advances to `f6` or `h6`, directly guarding `g7`!
- Queen Infiltration (`Qh6 → Qg7#`): Your Queen slips into `h6` (or `f6`/diagonal) and lands on `g7#`!
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Blockade `f4–f5–f6` and `h4–h5–h6` pawn advances early (`...f5` or `...h5`) before a wedge pawn ever reaches the 6th rank!
- Understand that `...Re8` vacating `f8` DOES NOT STOP `Qg7#`! Instead, play `...Bf8` (guarding `g7`? No, `Bf8` can’t guard `g7`—play `...Qf8!` or `...Ne8–g7` or `...Nh5` blocking `Qh6`)!
- Trade Queens or guard `g7` directly (`...Qf8!` or `...Ne8` BEFORE `Qh6` arrives)!
FAQ
Why does vacating `f8` (`1... Rfe8`) fail completely against Lolli's Mate (`2. Qg7#`), whereas it saves Damiano's Mate (`Qh7#`)?
Pure board geometry! A Queen on `h7` (`Damiano’s Mate`) does NOT attack `f8`, so `...Re8` lets the King run via `Kf8`! By contrast, a Queen on `g7` (`Lolli’s Mate`) stands right beside `f8`, locking `f8`, `g8`, AND `h8` simultaneously!
Who was Giambattista Lolli (1698–1769)?
Along with Ercole del Rio and Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani, Lolli formed the famous 18th-century “Modenese Masters” school in Italy that championed dynamic piece play and attacking tactics over slow pawn structures.
Can an `h6` wedge pawn create Lolli’s Mate just as cleanly as an `f6` pawn?
Identically! Pushing `h4–h5–h6` against `...g6` lets the `h6` pawn guard `g7` while your Queen enters via `Qf6`, `Qd4`, or `Qg7#` along a diagonal!
