Clearance
Sacrificing or Moving Your Own Blocking Piece with Tempo to Vacate a Vital Square or Line
Sometimes the only obstacle stopping a winning mate is ONE OF YOUR OWN PIECES standing on the dream square or clogging an open file. Clearance solves that traffic jam dynamically: the blocking piece leaps forward—almost always with check or a major threat—so the heavier piece behind it takes over immediately.
Coach Otto: When your own rook or knight is standing in your Queen’s way, Otto asks: where can this polite teammate jump WITH CHECK to clear the stage?
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Clearance (Mate in 2) —
FEN: r2q1rk1/ppp2ppp/8/7N/8/3B3Q/PPP2PPP/6K1 w - - 0 1· Nf6+ gxf6 Qxh7#1. Nf6+! — Line clearance: White’s own h5 knight blocks the h3 Queen from reaching h7, so it leaps away with check!
- [MASTERPIECE] Square Clearance on h6 for Queen Entry (Mate in 3) —
FEN: r4rk1/pp3p2/5PpR/7p/8/8/PP1Q2PP/6K1 w - - 0 1· Rh8+ Kxh8 Qh6+ Kg8 Qg7#1. Rh8+!! — Square clearance: White’s own rook occupies the vital h6 square needed by the d2 Queen, so it sacrifices itself on h8 with check!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- A decisive mating net or material win exists EXCEPT that a friendly unit occupies the required square (Square Clearance) or ray (Line Clearance).
- Vacating slowly without tempo would give the opponent time to consolidate (e.g., ...Re8 + ...Kf8).
- Therefore, the vacating unit sacrifices itself with check or an unstoppable mate threat to preserve the initiative.
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Never assume an opponent’s awkward piece traffic is permanent—always test checks by the “blocking” piece!
- Guard the critical entry square behind the blocker (such as h6 or h7) with an extra defender.
- Trade off the rear Queen or Bishop before the opponent can uncork a clearance sacrifice.
FAQ
What is the difference between Square Clearance and Line Clearance?
Square Clearance vacates ONE specific landing coordinate for another friendly piece (e.g., 1. Rh8+!! vacating h6 for 2. Qh6+); Line Clearance opens an entire rank, file, or diagonal (e.g., 1. Nf6+! opening the h-file for Qxh7#).
How does Line Clearance differ from a Discovered Attack?
In a Discovered Attack, the rear piece ALREADY attacks the target the instant the front piece moves; in Line Clearance, the rear piece still uses the newly opened corridor on its NEXT move (e.g., sliding down the file to mate).
Can pawns also execute Clearance sacrifices?
Frequently! Pushing a pawn like e5–e6! or f5–f6! sacrifices the pawn specifically to vacate the e5/f5 square for a Knight or open a long diagonal for a Bishop.
