Epaulette Mate
Frontal Queen Checkmate Against a Rim King Flanked on Both Sides by Its Own Rooks
Named after the ornamental shoulder pieces (épaulettes) on military uniforms, the Epaulette Mate traps a King on the edge of the board flanked immediately to its left and right by two of its OWN pieces (classically `Rd8–Ke8–Rf8` or `Rf8–Kg8–Rh8`). A solo unprotected Queen standing two squares straight in front (`Qe6#` or `Qg6#`) delivers mate single-handedly.
Coach Otto: Notice how Qe6# needs ZERO support! Standing one empty square away from Ke8, the Queen is out of King reach while sweeping d7, e7, and f7!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Epaulette Mate (Mate in 1) —
FEN: 3rkr2/p5pp/8/8/8/1Q4P1/5PKP/8 w - - 0 1· Qe6#1. Qe6# — Pure Epaulette Mate! Black’s own rooks on d8 and f8 flank the King like ornamental shoulder boards while the Queen sweeps e8, d7, and f7!
- [MASTERPIECE] Rook Sacrifice Clearing e6 for Epaulette (Mate in 2) —
FEN: 3rkr2/6pp/p3b3/1pnQ2N1/8/6P1/5PKP/4R3 w - - 0 1· Rxe6+ Nxe6 Qxe6#1. Rxe6+! — Eliminates the e6 bishop shield with check while luring the c5 knight onto e6.
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- The enemy King stands on the back rank (or board edge) with BOTH lateral neighbor squares occupied by friendly pieces (`Rd8–Ke8–Rf8`).
- The two files/squares directly in front of the King (`e7` and `e6`) are open and unguarded by enemy defenders.
- Your Queen lands two squares orthogonally in front of the King (`Qe6#`), simultaneously checking along the file and covering both forward diagonals (`d7` and `f7`)!
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Avoid crowding both Rooks directly beside an uncastled or boxed-in King (`Rd8 + Ke8 + Rf8`) when central files are open.
- Guard the critical two-square standoff point (`e6` or `g6`) with a pawn (`f7`) or bishop.
- Vacate one shoulder square early so the King retains a lateral step.
FAQ
Why doesn’t the Queen need a supporting piece in the classic Epaulette Mate (1. Qe6#)?
Because she stands TWO squares away (`e6` vs `e8`), not adjacent! The King cannot capture her, her orthogonal ray checks `e8` through `e7`, and her diagonals simultaneously cover `d7` and `f7`!
How do Epaulette Mate, Swallow’s Tail Mate, and Dovetail Mate differ geometrically?
In Epaulette Mate, the Queen stands 1 empty square away and two blockers sit BESIDE a rim King (`d8/f8`). In Swallow’s Tail (`M20`) and Dovetail (`M19`), a PROTECTED Queen stands ADJACENT to a non-rim King while two blockers sit diagonally behind it!
Has an Epaulette Mate theme ever appeared in a World Chess Championship game?
Famously in Game 9 of Anand–Carlsen (Chennai 2013), where Anand resigned one move before `28... Qe1#`—a vertical Epaulette Mate with White’s own Queen on f1 and Rook on d1 acting as the shoulder boards!
