Fork

Simultaneous Single-Piece Double Attack on Two High-Value Targets

A Fork occurs when a single piece—most famously a Knight or Pawn—attacks two or more enemy units simultaneously. Because knights jump along non-linear L-vectors without reciprocating lines of fire, a knight fork against King and Queen cannot be blocked and leaves no time to save both.

Coach Otto: Whenever two enemy heavy pieces stand on squares of the same color, Otto immediately scans for a safe knight-fork landing square!

Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines

  • [ARCHETYPE] Fork (+5.68 Winning) — FEN: 2q3k1/5ppp/8/3N4/8/6P1/5PKP/8 w - - 0 1 · Ne7+ Kh8 Nxc8

    1. Ne7+! — Royal knight fork: one non-linear leap checks the King on g8 while simultaneously attacking the loose Queen on c8.

  • [MASTERPIECE] Exchange Decoy into Royal Fork (+3.85 Winning) — FEN: 3q2k1/3r1p1p/6p1/1B6/4N3/6P1/5PKP/3R4 w - - 0 1 · Rxd7 Qxd7 Nf6+ Kg7 Nxd7

    1. Rxd7! — Clears the d7 defender and drags the Black Queen onto a square sharing knight-fork geometry with g8.

  • [COUNTEREXAMPLE] Refuted: Fork Square Guarded (Refuted · Blunder) — FEN: 2q1r1k1/5ppp/8/3N4/8/6P1/5PKP/8 w - - 0 1 · Ne7+ Rxe7

    1. Ne7+?? — Blindly jumping into the fork geometry without checking who guards the landing square e7.

Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers

  • Two enemy targets stand unguarded—or are worth more than the attacking unit—and share a common geometric focal square.
  • For a knight fork, both targets MUST sit on squares of the IDENTICAL color; opposite-colored squares can never be forked by a knight in one move.
  • The fork square itself must be unguarded, or the fork must include check so the opponent cannot capture the attacker with the non-checking target.

Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls

  • Break same-color alignment: step your King or Queen onto an opposite-colored square before an enemy knight approaches.
  • Guard the focal fork square directly so the incoming piece is captured on arrival (as in the Counterexample tab).
  • Answer a non-checking fork by counter-attacking with tempo—moving one target to deliver check so the second target escapes next turn.

FAQ

Why can a knight only fork two pieces standing on the same square color?

Every knight move strictly alternates square color. Therefore, from any landing square a knight attacks exclusively squares of the opposite color—meaning all targets hit simultaneously must share one identical square color.

What is the difference between a Fork and a Discovered Attack?

A Fork uses ONE piece to threaten two targets simultaneously, whereas a Discovered Attack uses TWO cooperating pieces—one stepping aside to attack a target while unmasking a stationary ranged piece behind it.

Can kings and queens also execute forks?

Yes. Queens excel at wide diagonal-plus-rank forks against undefended loose pieces, while Kings frequently fork two enemy minor pieces or rooks in simplified endgames.
