Removing the Defender

Capturing or Trading Off the Exact Enemy Unit Holding a Key Defensive Post Together

Also known as Undermining, Removing the Defender is the foundational logic behind tactical combination play: instead of staring only at a guarded target or mating square, trace backward to the enemy unit protecting it and capture or exchange that guardian with tempo.

Coach Otto: Whenever a juicy square looks “protected once,” Otto shifts focus from the treasure chest to the lone guard holding the key!

Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines

  • [ARCHETYPE] Removing the Defender (+5.79 Winning) — FEN: 2b3k1/pp3ppp/5n2/3r4/8/1P2N1P1/PB3PKP/R7 w - - 0 1 · Bxf6 gxf6 Nxd5

    1. Bxf6! — Directly eliminates the f6 knight, the sole piece defending Black’s d5 rook.

  • [MASTERPIECE] Undermining Central Bishop Support (+5.96 Winning) — FEN: r4rk1/pp3ppp/2n5/1B2b3/8/6PN/PP3PK1/3RR3 w - - 0 1 · Bxc6 bxc6 Rxe5

    1. Bxc6! — Trades off the c6 knight that props up Black’s active e5 bishop.

Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers

  • An enemy piece or critical mating square relies on a single defender (or exact numerical parity of defenders).
  • You can capture that defender at equal value—or with check—so the opponent must spend their turn recapturing.
  • Verify the opponent has no Zwischenzug (in-between check or counter-capture) before recapturing your piece!

Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls

  • Overprotect central outposts and vulnerable knights so trading one defender still leaves a backup guard.
  • Avoid chains of “loose pieces defending loose pieces” where one trade collapses the entire chain.
  • When your defender is captured without check, pause to look for a counter-attacking Zwischenzug with the threatened piece itself!

FAQ

How does Removing the Defender differ from Deflection?

Removing the Defender physically eliminates (captures/exchanges) the guarding unit on its own square; Deflection lures or forces that guardian to MOVE AWAY to another square so it abandons its post.

Why does the Ruy Lopez (3. Bb5) revolve around Removing the Defender?

White’s bishop eyes the c6 knight defending e5. Once White prepares d4 and protects e4 (with Re1 or c3), Bxc6 dxc6 Nxe5 becomes a real positional and tactical threat.

What is the #1 calculation blunder when executing Removing the Defender?

Assuming an automatic recapture! If your first capture is NOT check, the threatened target piece itself might flee with check—saving both!
