Decoy (Attraction)
Magnetic Sacrifice Dragging the Enemy King or Heavy Piece onto a Fatal Square
A Decoy (or Attraction) is a magnetic sacrifice that lures an enemy King or Queen onto a specific poisoned square where it immediately falls victim to a fork, skewer, discovered check, or checkmate. You first envision the dream geometry—“if only their King stood on h7 or f7!”—then sacrifice on that exact square.
Coach Otto: Whenever your knight fork is “just one square off,” Otto asks: can I sacrifice a rook to pull their King onto the missing coordinate?
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Decoy (Attraction) (+6.19 Winning) —
FEN: 6k1/3q1rpp/p7/8/6N1/4P1PP/5R1K/5R2 w - - 0 1· Rxf7 Qxf7 Rxf7 Kxf7 Ne5+ Ke6 Nd71. Rxf7! — Begins a double-exchange attraction sacrifice targeting the magnetic square f7.
- [MASTERPIECE] Queen Decoy into Corner Rook Mate (Mate in 3) —
FEN: 5rk1/pp3ppp/2n3N1/4N2Q/3R4/8/PPP3PP/6K1 w - - 0 1· Qxh7+ Kxh7 Rh4+ Kg8 Rh8#1. Qxh7+!! — Classic corner decoy: sacrifices the Queen to drag Black’s King onto the exposed h-file!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- A latent tactical pattern (knight fork, bishop skewer, corridor mate) lacks ONLY one geometric ingredient: the enemy target standing on square X.
- Sacrificing on square X with check or against a major piece leaves the opponent practically or legally forced to capture onto X.
- After the entire sacrifice-and-payoff sequence, your net material balance—or forced checkmate—is strictly winning.
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Never recapture reflexively with your King! Always verify whether declining a check-sacrifice (stepping away instead of taking) avoids a mating net or royal fork.
- Keep your King and Queen off knight-fork distances even across squares currently occupied by your own pawns.
- Watch for h7/g7/f7 sacrifices whenever two opposing knights hover near your castled King.
FAQ
How do chess coaches teach students to spot Decoy sacrifices over the board?
Work backward from tactical geometry! Spot your active knight or bishop, ask “where would the enemy King or Queen have to stand for a fork or mate?”, and test a sacrifice on that square.
Must the opponent always accept a Decoy sacrifice?
Not unless acceptance is the sole legal move (as in 1. Qxh7+ Kxh7)! Always calculate declining lines before sacrificing a Queen or Rook.
Why are f7 (for Black) and f2 (for White) the most frequent Decoy squares?
Early on, f7/f2 is defended only by the King; dragging the King out to f7/f2 exposes it simultaneously to central checks and knight forks.
