Trapped Piece
Sealing Every Safe Flight Square Around an Overextended Enemy Queen, Rook, or Minor Piece
Even a 9-point Queen becomes helpless if all of her safe landing squares are controlled by humbler enemy pawns and minor pieces. Trapped Piece tactics punish greedy raids (especially Qxb2 / Qxb7), rim knights (Na8/Nh8), and unguarded bishops hemmed in by advancing pawn chains.
Coach Otto: Before your Queen munches a free b2 or b7 pawn, Otto always plots her return ticket home—because getting in is easy, getting out costs 9 points!

Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- An enemy piece stands near the edge, in a corner (a8/h8/a1/h1), or deep inside your camp surrounded by pawn chains.
- Every legal flight square is controlled by pieces of LOWER value than the target.
- Attacking the stranded piece with a pawn, rook, or bishop forces an unfavorable capture.
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Never grab b2/b7 with your Queen until you calculate two moves of defensive retreats against Rb1/Ra1 and Bishop/Knightblocks!
- Give fianchettoed or Ruy Lopez bishops an early a3/h3 escape pocket ("loft") against c5–c4 or f5–f4 pawn storms.
- Rescue knights from a8/h8 corners immediately after winning a corner rook before the opponent’s King or Bishop cages them.
FAQ
Why is the Ruy Lopez trap 8...c5 ... 11...c4 called the “Noah’s Ark Trap”?
Documented since the 19th century and even snaring masters in simultaneous exhibitions, the name refers both to its ancient pedigree (“as old as Noah’s Ark”) and the ark-like wall of a6–b5–c4 pawns.
Which piece is easiest to trap in endgames?
A Knight on the rim or corner (a8/h8/a1/h1): a single opposing Bishop standing three squares away orthogonally (e.g., Bd5 vs Na8, or Be5 vs Nh8) dominates all of the knight’s jumps!
What should I watch out for right after sealing an enemy piece’s escape?
Desperado sacrifices (T14)! Before celebrating, verify the trapped bishop or knight cannot blow up two pawns on f7/g7 to expose your King.
