Perpetual Check
Rescuing a Materially Lost Game by Locking the Enemy King into an Unbreakable Check Loop
When you stand down a Rook or two pieces with defeat looming, your objective pivots instantly from winning to surviving. Perpetual Check forces a draw under FIDE’s Threefold Repetition (or 50-Move) rule by trapping the opposing King inside a closed geometric box of inescapable checks.
Coach Otto: No matter how many rooks you are down, Otto never clicks Resign before checking whether their own f8 rook traps their King in a Qg5+/Qf6+ loop!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Perpetual Check (0.00 Draw Saved) —
FEN: 5rk1/5p1p/8/8/8/4Q3/qrr3PP/7K w - - 0 1· Qg5+ Kh8 Qf6+ Kg8 Qg5+ Kh81. Qg5+! — Down TWO FULL ROOKS on the 2nd rank and facing mate in 1, White locks Black’s King into the g8–h8 corner box!
- [COUNTEREXAMPLE] Refuted: Open f8 Flight Route Escapes (Refuted (M6)) —
FEN: 6k1/4pp1p/8/8/8/4Q3/qrr3PP/7K w - - 0 1· Qg5+ Kf81. Qg5+?? — Hoping for the same Qg5+/Qf6+ perpetual when f8 is VACANT and e7 shields the center!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- You are significantly behind in material (or lack sufficient attackers to finish a checkmate), making a draw a triumph.
- The enemy King’s pawn shield around g7/h7 is broken, AND its central escape (f8/e7) is blocked—often by its OWN rook on f8!
- None of the opponent’s extra pieces can capture your checking Queen or interpose along the check vector without losing.
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- When comfortably ahead in material, King safety overrides EVERYTHING—never grab a meaningless pawn that opens the g-file!
- Trade Queens at the first clean opportunity; without Queens on the board, solo-piece perpetual checks drop by 90%.
- Leave f8 open (or keep a defensive Queen/Bishop watching g5/f6/h6) so your King can walk toward shelter and extinguish checks.
FAQ
Is “Perpetual Check” a separate FIDE rule from Threefold Repetition?
Historically prior to 1965 it had its own clause; under modern FIDE Laws of Chess, Perpetual Check achieves an official draw automatically via Threefold Repetition (same position + turn + rights 3 times) or the 50-Move Rule.
What is the single most common geometric Perpetual Check pattern in tournament chess?
The Queen pendulum on g5 ↔ f6 (or g5 ↔ h6 / h5 ↔ e8) against a King boxed into g8 ↔ h8 by its own f8 rook or f7 pawn!
Can you sacrifice a Rook or Bishop JUST to create a Perpetual Check?
Absolutely! Sacrificing Rxg7+! Kxg7 followed by Qg5+–Qf6+ when down material is one of the highest-percentage defensive swindles in tournament play.
