Greek Gift Sacrifice
The Classical Bxh7+ Kingside Demolition Formula and Its Four Mandatory Preconditions
Alluding to the Trojan Horse (“Beware of Greeks bearing gifts,” first analyzed by Gioachino Greco in 1620), the Greek Gift sacrifices a light-squared bishop on h7 (or dark-squared bishop on h2) to drag the castled King out for Ng5+ and Qh5/Qg4. When its four geometric laws hold, calculation becomes nearly algorithmic.
Coach Otto: Before wrapping a Greek Gift on h7, Otto ticks off all four fingers: h7 unguarded, Ng5+ ready, Qh5 open, AND an e5 pawn locking f6 shut!

- [MASTERPIECE] Branch B: Brave ...Kg6 Walk Calculated (+15.76 Winning) —
FEN: r1b2rk1/pp3ppp/1qn1p3/3pP3/3P4/2PB1N2/PP3PPP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 1· Bxh7+ Kxh7 Ng5+ Kg6 Qg4 f5 exf6 Kxf6 Nh7+ Ke7 Qxg7+1. Bxh7+! — Launching the identical sacrifice to test Black’s sharpest defense: walking forward to g6!
- [COUNTEREXAMPLE] Refuted: Knight on f8 Guards h7! (Refuted · Blunder) —
FEN: r1bq1nk1/ppp2ppp/2n1p3/3pP3/3P4/3B1N2/PPP2PPP/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 1· Bxh7+ Nxh71. Bxh7+?? — Playing Bxh7+ on autopilot from French/Colle muscle memory while Black has a Knight tucked on f8!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- Law 1 (Lone King on h7): Black has ZERO minor-piece defenders watching h7 (no Nf6, no Nf8, no Bf5/Bg6!).
- Law 2 & 3 (Trio Access): Your Bishop hits h7, your Knight can jump immediately to g5 with check, and your Queen has a clear diagonal to h5/g4.
- Law 4 (Central Wedge Pawn on e5): A pawn on e5 (or bishop controlling f6) stops ...Nf6 defense AND enables exf6 en passant against 2...Kg6 3.Qg4 f5!
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Keep a knight on f6 or tuck a knight onto f8 (...Nf8)—a knight on f8 is the ultimate anti-Greek-Gift vaccine!
- Control h7 with your light-squared bishop from f5 or g6 before castling kingside into a French/Colle setup.
- Push ...h6 BEFORE castling if your f6 knight has been driven away and White’s Bd3 + Nf3 + Qd1 battery is already aimed.
FAQ
Why is the e5 pawn considered so vital to a sound Greek Gift Sacrifice?
It performs two irreplaceable jobs: against 2...Kg8 3.Qh5 it forbids ...Nf6 (which otherwise shuts down Qh7# completely), and against 2...Kg6 3.Qg4 f5 it captures 4.exf6 e.p. to rip open the King!
Which openings produce the Greek Gift Sacrifice most frequently?
The French Defense, Colle System, London System, and Classical Queen’s Gambit Declined—whenever Black castles kingside after trading or retreating the f6 knight while White holds an e5 wedge.
If I am hit by 1. Bxh7+ unexpectedly, is 2... Kg6 or 2... Kg8 more resilient?
If White actually miscalculated one precondition (e.g., lacks a fourth attacker like h4 or Rf3), 2... Kg6! asks the hardest concrete questions—forcing White to find accurate follow-ups rather than getting automatic mate.
