Blind Swine Mate
Two Connected Rooks Rampaging Across the 7th Rank to Suffocate a Boxed-In Corner King
Coined by Polish-French grandmaster Dawid Janowski—who joked that doubled rooks on the 7th rank are like “blind swine” gobbling everything in sight until they stumble into checkmate—the Blind Swine Mate finishes a King boxed into g8/h8 by its own f8 rook via `Rxg7+ Kh8 → Rxh7+ Kg8 → Rbg7#`.
Coach Otto: One rook on the 7th rank wins pawns; TWO connected rooks on the 7th rank win the King—especially when their own f8 rook locks the exit door!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Blind Swine Mate (Mate in 3) —
FEN: 5rk1/1RR4p/8/8/8/6P1/5PKP/8 w - - 0 1· Rg7+ Kh8 Rxh7+ Kg8 Rbg7#1. Rg7+! — Initiates the unstoppable “Pigs on the 7th” bulldozer! Black’s f8 rook helplessly blocks its own King’s central escape.
- [MASTERPIECE] 7th-Rank Bulldozer Ignoring Extra Black Queen (Mate in 3) —
FEN: 3q1rk1/1RR3pp/8/8/8/6P1/5PKP/8 w - - 0 1· Rxg7+ Kh8 Rxh7+ Kg8 Rbg7#1. Rxg7+! — Even though Black holds an extra FULL QUEEN on d8, she cannot guard g7/h7 in time once connected rooks hit the 7th!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- Both of your Rooks occupy the 7th rank (or 2nd rank for Black) with clear access to g7 and h7.
- Crucial Blocker: Black’s f8 square is blocked—almost always by Black’s OWN passive rook on f8—so the King cannot escape to f8–e7!
- No enemy minor piece or rook guards BOTH g7 and h7 simultaneously.
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- NEVER allow the second enemy rook onto your 7th rank without trading at least one pair of rooks!
- Move your f8 rook off f8 (...Re8 or ...Rd8) BEFORE Rxg7+ arrives—giving your King the f8 escape hatch turns mate into a mere perpetual check!
- Defend g7 laterally along the 7th rank with your own rook (e.g., ...Rf7).
FAQ
Where did the funny name “Blind Swine Mate” come from?
Attacking legend Dawid Janowski coined “blind swine” (later popularized by Aron Nimzowitsch in My System) because two rooks on the 7th rank require almost zero subtle vision—they simply devour pawns sideways and mate automatically!
What happens in the Blind Swine position if Black’s f8 square is EMPTY instead of occupied by Rf8?
Without a blocker on f8, 1.Rxg7+ Kh8 2.Rxh7+ Kg8 3.Rbg7+?? allows 3...Kf8! escaping the mate—so White would have to settle for perpetual check unless another piece covers f8!
Can two rooks deliver Blind Swine Mate vertically along the g- and h-files too?
Yes! Rotating the pattern 90 degrees—with rooks on g7/g8 and h7/h8 against a King trapped on h8/h7—is geometrically identical.
