Sicilian Dragon Structure
Fire-Breathing g7 Dragon Diagonal & ...Rxc3 Counter-Sacrifices vs the Yugoslav h4–h5–Bh6 Mating Race
Named by Russian master Fyodor Dus-Chotimirsky after the constellation Draco formed by Black’s d6–e7–f7–g6–h7 pawns, the Sicilian Dragon Structure pits the fiercest bishop in chess—Black’s unopposed dark-squared Dragon bishop on g7—against chess’s most clinical mating blueprint: the Yugoslav Attack. When White castles queenside (Be3, f3, Qd2, Bc4–b3, O-O-O) and Black castles kingside, a zero-margin race erupts: White plays Bh6 to extinguish the g7 Dragon bishop while battering the g6 hook with h4–h5–hxg6 ("Pry open the h-file, sac, sac, mate!"), whereas Black fires straight down the half-open c-file + a1–h8 diagonal with ...Rc8, ...Qa5, ...Rxc3! exchange sacrifices, or the central ...d5! equalizer.
Coach Otto: In the Dragon, the g6 pawn is simultaneously Bg7’s window and White’s bullseye—Otto never plays the Dragon without having ...Rxc3! or ...d5! locked and loaded on the other side of the board!

Endgame Simplification Verdict
Heavily favors Black if Black survives into an endgame with the g7 Dragon bishop alive and White’s queenside shattered after ...Rxc3 bxc3; favors White if Bh6 successfully trades off Bg7 leaving weak dark squares (f6/h6) around Black’s king.

Structural Owner Plans & Pawn Levers
- Execute the Yugoslav Blueprint: set up Be3, f3 (preventing ...Ng4!), Qd2, Bc4–b3 (stopping ...d5!), and O-O-O.
- Trade off Black’s pride and joy—the dark-squared g7 Dragon bishop—with Bh6, leaving permanent dark-square craters on f6 and h6.
- Use the g6 fianchetto pawn as a contact hook: march h2–h4–h5! (often backed by g4 when needed) so hxg6 opens the h-file for Rh1 and Qh2/Qh6.
- Include Kb1 prophylaxis early to step off the half-open c-file and defang ...Rxc3 checks.
Defender Counterplans & Antidotes
- Punish any White setup that omits Bc4 by striking immediately in the center with ...d5!—dissolving White’s attack before h4 even starts.
- Against Bc4–b3, generate blistering queenside speed via ...Rc8, ...Ne5–c4, ...Qa5, and ...b5–b4 without touching your own kingside pawns unnecessarily.
- Master the signature Dragon positional/tactical exchange sacrifice ...Rxc3! bxc3: shattering White’s king shelter, eliminating the defender of e4/d5, and unleashing Bg7 against c3 and b2!
- Defend the h-file dynamically with ...Re8 + ...Bh8 (preserving the Dragon bishop!) or Soltis ...h5! blocking h4–h5 at the root.
FAQ
Why did Bobby Fischer famously summarize the Yugoslav Attack as "Pry open the h-file, sac, sac, mate"?
Because Black’s ...g6 pawn gives White an immovable target on the 6th rank! Unlike a flat f7–g7–h7 shield, g6 lets White’s h4–h5 force open the h-file almost mechanically—and once Bh6 removes Bg7, Black’s dark squares collapse.
Why does Black willingly sacrifice the exchange on c3 (...Rxc3! bxc3) so often in the Dragon?
White’s c3-knight both defends the c1/b1 king shelter AND guards e4 and d5. Giving up a rook on c8 for that knight leaves White’s king naked behind shattered c-pawns right in the path of Black’s queen and the unopposed g7 Dragon bishop!
Where else does the Dragon pawn skeleton appear with colors reversed?
In the Symmetrical/Reversed Dragon of the English Opening (1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Bg2), where White plays a Dragon with an extra tempo, and in Pirc Defense opposite-castling battles!
