Nimzo-Indian Doubled c-Pawns
Nimzowitsch’s Ultimate Imbalance: Surrendering the Bishop Pair on move 4–6 to Freeze Doubled c3+c4 Pawns
No structure better captures Aron Nimzowitsch’s revolutionary genius than trading a sleek bishop for a knight via ...Bxc3+ bxc3 (or Bxc6 bxc6 in the Rossolimo Sicilian) before move 7! White gladly receives the Bishop Pair plus a reinforced c3+d4 central mass capable of powering Botvinnik’s legendary f3 + e4 + f4–f5 kingside steamroller (as in Botvinnik–Capablanca AVRO 1938 and Botvinnik–Kan 1939). Black receives a permanent structural target: by fixing the front twin on c4 with ...c5!, locking the center with ...e5! + ...d6, and besieging c4 via ...Nc6–a5 + ...Ba6 + ...Qd7–a4, Black turns White’s bishops into spectators and harvests the dead c4 pawn!
Coach Otto: Doubled c-pawns are a ticking clock: if White blasts open the kingside with f4! the bishops rule the world; if Black locks ...c5 + ...e5 and parks knights on dark squares, c4 drops like ripe fruit!

Endgame Simplification Verdict
Heavily favors Black in closed structure endgames (especially "Two Knights vs Bad Bishop + Dead c4 Pawn" after ...Ba6 trades light-squared bishops, as in Spassky–Fischer 1972); favors White if central/kingside files open so the Bishop Pair sweeps both flanks.

Structural Owner Plans & Pawn Levers
- Keep the position dynamic and fluid! Use the extra central c3-pawn to support e3–e4! and f2–f4–f5! (Botvinnik’s Sämisch/AVRO steamroller), ripping open kingside lines for the two bishops.
- Guard against letting c4 get permanently blockaded: when tactically sound, play cxd5 early OR prepare a4 to deter ...Ba6 + ...Na5–b3.
- Centralize pieces onto vacated outposts (such as e4 or d5 after f4–f5) and combine Bd3 + Qe2–f2–g3 + Rb1–b2–f2 rook lifts against Black’s king!
- Never trade off your active bishop into a closed single-bishop vs knight ending with c3+c4 fixed on light/dark squares.
Defender Counterplans & Antidotes
- Execute the Hübner/Capablanca Blockade: fix White’s front c-pawn immediately with ...c5!, then seal the center with ...d6 and ...e5! so White’s bishops hit solid concrete.
- Neutralize White’s kingside f2–f4 break at the root via ...Ne7–g6! (as Fischer did against Spassky in 1972), draining all attacking venom from White’s camp.
- Lay siege to the immobilized c4 pawn with ...b6, ...Ba6 (trading light-squared bishops), ...Nc6–a5, and ...Qd7–a4!
- In the Rossolimo Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g6 4.Bxc6 dxc6/bxc6), mirror the exact same siege in reverse with White’s c4 + d3 + Be3!
FAQ
Why would Black ever give up the Bishop Pair voluntarily on move 4 or 6 without winning a pawn?
Because Bishop Pair superiority ONLY exists when diagonals can be pried open! By inflicting static doubled c3+c4 pawns and immediately clamping them with ...c5 + ...e5, Black freezes the center shut so knights outshine bishops.
How did Mikhail Botvinnik prove White’s side of this imbalance at AVRO 1938 and Leningrad 1939?
Botvinnik showed that White must ignore the doomed queenside pawn on c4/a4 completely and hurl f3 + e4 + f4–f5 (or e4–e5!) straight at Black’s king—sacrificing the queenside husk to deliver a crushing central/kingside mate!
Where does White inflict this exact doubled c-pawn structure onto Black?
In the Rossolimo Sicilian (3. Bb5 followed by Bxc6 bxc6 or dxc6) and the Winawer French in reverse—where White locks c5/c4 and besieges Black’s doubled c-pawns with b3, Ba3, and Na4!
