The Bishop Pair
Dual-Color Diagonal Supremacy, Steinitz’s Knight-Restriction Barrier & When to Trade Them
A single bishop touches only 32 squares of one color, leaving the other 32 squares blind; together, The Bishop Pair commands all 64 squares across both color complexes at long range. Worth roughly half a pawn in open or fluid positions with pawns on both wings, the two bishops become lethal when they sweep side-by-side while friendly pawns steal every central foothold from enemy knights.
Coach Otto: Two bishops love fresh air and hate traffic jams! Otto uses pawns to fence out enemy knights first, then cracks open a pawn lever!

Endgame Simplification Verdict
As heavy pieces come off and the board opens with pawns on both flanks, the bishop pair grows stronger with every trade—because bishops cross the entire board in a single move while knights need four tempi to switch wings.

Structural Owner Plans & Pawn Levers
- Apply Steinitz’s Restriction Method: push pawns (like ...c5, ...b6, and ...f5 in Plan A) to confiscate every central outpost square from the opponent’s knight.
- Keep the position fluid and prepare timely pawn breaks to open long criss-crossing diagonals on both wings.
- Know when to cash in the asset: once your bishop pair forces a permanent structural concession or winning king attack, trade one bishop cleanly into a winning Superior Minor Piece endgame.
Defender Counterplans & Antidotes
- Lock the central pawn chains (as in the Nimzo-Indian Hübner ...c5–d6–e5 clamp) so the opponent’s bishops stare into granite walls.
- Anchor a knight on an unassailable central outpost where only one of the opponent’s bishops can ever attack it—forcing them to surrender the bishop pair to evict your knight.
- Seek direct trade of one of the two bishops along active diagonals before the opponent opens the center.
FAQ
How much is the bishop pair worth in objective engine evaluation?
In open or semi-open positions with pawns on both sides of the board, modern engines typically value the bishop pair at +0.40 to +0.60 pawns over bishop-plus-knight or two knights. In locked pawn chains with zero available pawn breaks, that bonus shrinks to zero or even turns negative.
What is Steinitz’s classic method for playing two bishops against bishop and knight?
Instead of rushing recklessly, Steinitz first erected little pawn barriers (such as c5+b6 or f5+g6) on the squares directly ahead of the enemy knight, driving the knight backward into passivity before opening lines on both wings.
When should I voluntarily give up the bishop pair?
When trading bishop for knight inflicts an irreversible static defect—such as doubled isolated c-pawns in the Nimzo-Indian or Rossolimo Sicilian—AND you can subsequently lock the pawn structure so the opponent’s remaining bishops stay bottled up.
