Greco's Mate
An Italian-Diagonal Bishop Sealing g8 While a Rook or Queen Delivers Checkmate Down the Open h-File
Recorded in 1620 by Calabrian tactical genius Gioachino Greco (“Il Calabrese”), Greco’s Mate showcases the lethal reach of the Italian Bishop on the `a2–g8` diagonal (`Bc4` or `Bb3`). While the Bishop slices through `f7` to lock the corner King’s sole inner escape square (`g8`), a Rook or Queen delivers checkmate along the open outer `h`-file (`Rh3#` or `Qh5#`).
Coach Otto: Whenever your Italian bishop controls `g8` unobstructed and their King steps into `h8`, Otto immediately tests `Ng6+!` or `Rxh7+!` to pry open the h-file!
Open Anatomical Board Examples & Move Lines
- [ARCHETYPE] Gioachino Greco Manuscript, 1620 (Mate in 2) —
FEN: r4r1k/ppp1N1pp/8/8/2B5/3R4/PPP2PPP/6K1 w - - 0 1· Ng6+ hxg6 Rh3#1. Ng6+! — Gioachino Greco’s timeless 1620 h-file opener! With f7 already traded away and Bc4 sealing g8, ONLY the h7 pawn can capture!
- [MASTERPIECE] Rook Sacrifice Clearing h7 for Greco Queen Mate (Mate in 2) —
FEN: r4r1k/ppp3pn/8/6Q1/2B5/6P1/PPP2PK1/7R w - - 0 1· Rxh7+ Kxh7 Qh5#1. Rxh7+!! — Sacrifices the h1 rook to rip away the h7 corner shield while Bc4 holds g8 under lock and key!
Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- `a2–g8` Diagonal Control: Your light-squared Bishop (`Bc4` / `Bb3`) controls `g8` cleanly across an open `f7` square.
- Blocked `g7` Square: An enemy pawn sits on `g7` (or `g6`), preventing the King from escaping diagonally inward.
- Open `h`-File Strike: Opened forcibly via `Ng6+! hxg6` or `Rxh7+! Kxh7`, letting a single Rook or Queen mate along the `h`-file!
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- Block or blunt the `a2–g8` Italian diagonal (`...Be6`, `...Na5`, or `...d5`) BEFORE tucking your King into `h8`!
- Guard `f7` intact so `Bc4` never penetrates all the way to `g8`.
- Keep a knight (`...Nf8` or `...Nf6`) able to interpose along the `h`-file (`...Nh7`).
FAQ
Why does `1. Ng6+! hxg6` backfire so badly on Black in Greco's 1620 setup?
Capturing `1... hxg6` simultaneously opens the fatal `h`-file for White’s rook AND leaves Black’s `g7` pawn sealing the King’s inward diagonal escape while `Bc4` locks `g8`!
How does Greco's Mate differ from Anastasia's Mate?
Both mate down the open `h`-file with an enemy `g7` pawn helping block! The difference is WHO locks `g8`: in Anastasia’s Mate, a Knight on `e7` covers `g8` and `g6`; in Greco’s Mate, a long-range Bishop on `c4/b3` slices `g8` diagonally!
Who was Gioachino Greco (1600–1634)?
Born in Calabria, Italy, Greco traveled the royal courts of Rome, Paris, London, and Madrid selling hand-illustrated manuscripts filled with dazzling tactical miniatures—including the earliest Greek Gift, Smothered, and Greco’s Mates!
