Boden's Mate
Criss-Crossing Opposite-Colored Bishops Slicing a Queenside-Castled King After a Queen Sacrifice
Immortalized by English master Samuel Standidge Boden against R. Schulder in London 1853, Boden’s Mate executes a King (almost always castled queenside on `c1` or `c8`) using ONLY two criss-crossing opposite-colored Bishops (`Ba6#` + `Bf4`, or `Ba3#` + `Bf5`), typically unlocked by a bolt-from-the-blue Queen sacrifice (`Qxc6+! bxc6` or `Qxc3+! bxc3`).
Coach Otto: Whenever an opponent castles queenside (`O-O-O`) with Rd8 + Nd7 crowding their King, Otto immediately checks `Qxc6+! bxc6 Ba6#`!

Geometric Preconditions & Board Triggers
- Queenside Castled Target (`Kc8` with `Rd8` + `Nd7/Ne7` blocking its inward flight, or `Kc1` with `Rd1` + `Nd2`).
- Criss-Cross Bishop Pair: One bishop already rakes the `h2–b8` (or `h7–b1`) diagonal (`Bf4` / `Bf5`), while its partner eyes `a6` (or `a3`).
- Ignition Sacrifice: `Qxc6+! bxc6` (or `Rxc6+! bxc6`) eliminates the `c6` defender AND pulls the `b7` pawn off the `a6–c8` diagonal!
Defensive Antidotes & Calculation Pitfalls
- After `O-O-O`, play `Kb8` (or `Kb1`) proactively to step off the `f1–a6` / `f8–a3` diagonal and unpack `c8/c1`!
- Challenge or block the `h2–b8` bishop (`Bf4`) before allowing the opposing `f1` bishop free access to `a6`.
- Never leave `Rd8 + Nd7` wedged tightly beside `Kc8` when the opponent still holds the Bishop Pair and Queen!
FAQ
Why does `b7xc6` help the attacker so much in Boden's Mate (`1. Qxc6+! bxc6 2. Ba6#`)?
Double-whammy geometry! Before `1. Qxc6+`, `Nc6` guarded `a6` AND `Pb7` stood directly on the `a6–b7–c8` diagonal shielding the King; `1... bxc6` removes BOTH barriers at once!
Can Boden's Mate also occur against an uncastled central King or kingside King?
Occasionally (for instance, Alekhine vs Vasic, Banja Luka 1931, mated an uncastled `Kd8` via criss-cross bishops!), though 90% of tournament occurrences strike `O-O-O` positions.
How do Boden's Mate and Blackburne's Mate compare as minor-piece checkmates?
Boden’s Mate uses TWO CRISS-CROSSING bishops (plus enemy self-blockers on `d8/d7`); Blackburne’s Mate (`M15`) uses TWO PARALLEL raking bishops plus a friendly Knight covering the corner!
